Cyberspecies proximity

By Anna Dumitriu & Alex May in collaboration with Schindler

How will we share future cities with robots? This residency explores what it will mean to share our sidewalks, elevators and transport systems in close proximity with mobile intelligent robots. The “Cyberspecies Proximity” robot combines the wayfinding technologies used in delivery and maintenance robots with an ability to communicate and manipulate our emotions through body-language, embodied in a delicate humanoid form. The work challenges audiences to confront the technological, ethical, and societal questions raised by the advent of urban socially-aware robots.

Transhuman Expression

By Liat Grayver in collaboration with the WeDRAW Project

How can technology transform physical actions into paintings? During this residency, the artist collaborated with the weDRAW project that develops multisensory technology bringing children new education tools for understanding mathematical concepts. She designed an interactive installation generating geometric visual shapes from individual and collective body movement in space, investigating new relations between physical actions and painting.

Sensorium Audio Theatre

By Rafal Zapala in collaboration with FutureLab (Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center PSNC)

Can music monitor the evolution of our physiological states? This residency builds on the Future School Laboratory of Poznań which studies the role of technology in research and education, noticeably for enhancing students’ concentration. The “Sensorium Audio Theatre” proposes a new kind of auditory experience: the listener is equipped with biosensors used for controlling the generation of music over time, thus providing him/her feedback on his/her physiological state and the possibility of exerting control over the musical process.

Inside-Out

By Carolin Vogler in collaboration with the ChromDesign Project

Do you know what chromatin looks like? The happy meeting between textile technology and scientific research on chromatin organisation might turn into a fashion design hit. “Inside-Out” proposes an engaging experience where the blueprint of life is visible to the human eye and visitors are invited to actively participate in the installation and finger feel it. An artistic approach to DNA replication with a knitting machine and you might even have the chance to wear it!

OS.WAAM (wire arc additive manufacturing)

Parametric Functional Sculptures by Sebastien Wierinck in collaboration with Print Pioneers (B.I.G. Group)

How to bring large-scale metal 3D printing to society? Through the artistic input, this residency is pushing the technical limits of large-scale metal 3D printing. The main goal is to develop a new workflow for the production of a series of structures halfway between the public art piece and the urban furniture, which should allow to raise public awareness of the multiple possibilities of this new design and production system at several scales, from small objects to larger environmental and architectural integrations.

Embryonic

By Valeria Abendroth in collaboration with the 3D Prime Project

Can art help us reflect on the evolution of the human body through technology? Embryonic proposes a sensorial experience between reality and fantasy. From realistic 3D printings of human organs designed for medical training, you are invited to discover a fake laboratory combining these organs with art objects created by the artist. Compared to classical anatomic imaging, the ability of manipulating these physical objects brings a new dimension of awareness of their characteristics - size, shape and texture.

Muted a fall through silence

By Christophe Monchalin in collaboration with the CONTENT4ALL project

Can the experience of silence be felt through VR? “Muted” is a virtual reality installation that tackles the subject of abandonment through the sensation of weightlessness and sign language. Based on Fraunhofer HHI capturing technology, “Muted” poetically reveals the story of an abandoned girl who invents her own language. The visitor is invited to fall into a dedicated VR environment in which choreographed sign language is expressed through a dancing avatar. The artistic challenge is to bring out emotions of movements in a sensitive way.

Sleep in the City

By Walid Breidi & Virgile Novarina in collaboration with the Aarhus City Lab

Can our sleeping experience be shared in a smart city? In the Sleep in the City project, video streams are generated from the combination of data from multiple sources, including brainwaves of people sleeping in several places, as well as pollution and sound data. They are continuously changing in form and color, creating a contemplative experience about the richness of sleep involving citizens from all walks of life. This project invites us to reflect on the importance of sleep.

Invisible Agency

by Stanza in collaboration with the ArtAntenna Project

Can we see the agency of invisible data waves surrounding us? Invisible Agency is one of a series of dynamic artistic data visualisation interfaces by Stanza connecting in real-time city spaces which are investigating data manipulation across distributed technology networks. The artwork creates an aesthetic experience that facilitates a new understanding of the networked data space. It demonstrates and discloses WiFi traffic as an electronic systems-based artwork.

Artificial Intelligence and its false lies

by Mika Satomi and the CONFIRM Research Center

Would you rather be an Artificial Intelligence? In this residency, the artist and CONFIRM researchers together explore the alternative scenarios, constructions and embodiment of AI: an Artificial Neural Network embroidered on a garment that (machine) learns from the wearer. In this scenario you are not a part of big data but an individual passing on your work skills and knowledge to an AI. Your workwear/ uniform will become your apprentice that in future will take your place and perform your tasks... just like you do.

Data Union Fork

A workshop by Larisa Blazic in collaboration with the DECODE Project

What if citizens could go on a digital strike? Based on the DECODE project providing blockchain technology for decentralised ownership and control of data, Data Union Fork has been developed through a series of panels and workshops with citizens, designers, thinkers and activists around the notion of collective bargaining. The result of this work is presented as an installation that the audience can connect to and use for collective mobilisation. Discover the installation in the booth area and take part in the collective bargaining workshop.

O.R.S

By HeHe in collaboration with the NANO2WATER Project (INL)

How to reveal water quality through art? The O.R.S (Orbital River Station) is a large-scale floating sculpture. Its form suggests an oversized life ring, alerting people to the potential danger that arises from flooding. The artists partnered with the Nano2Water team, which explores a portfolio of technologies including biosensing devices for selective recognition and capture of water contaminants. Together they work on a device embedding such technologies allowing water quality monitoring to be included on the O.R.S.

The Crowd Plastic Waste Printing Project

by The New Raw in collaboration with the PTwist Project

Can civic engagement turn plastic waste into useful objects? This project explores the use of the city’s plastic waste as raw material & currency for products made with robotic 3D printing and citizen’s involvement. The idea is showcased with a temporary installation of 3D printed modular building blocks that promote civic participation & community building. The project encompasses multiple sustainability and social aspects, such as circular & exchange economy, and citizen empowerment.

Becoming.eco(logical)

by Miha Tursič & Špela Petrič in collaboration with ARCTUR

How to visualize the impact of humans on carbon emissions? Like data journalists, the artists research climate data to build an understanding of the human condition within a changing environment. With this wide set of data and a model of anthropospheric carbon flows, running on the ARCTUR supercomputer, the artists visualised an understanding of human impacts on global carbon flows. As contemporary activists, they are using this project to advocate for more open and accessible research data while shedding the light on models and simulation biases.
