Description of the challenges faced by the Tech Project
We will provide unlimited access to sixty hours of high quality, video footage, and an experimental web interface for procedural generation of cinematographic rushes from that footage. The challenges are to invent and co-design natural user interaction methodologies for accessing and manipulating a nearly infinite set of "virtual cinematographic rushes" and edit them into interactive movies that can be watched and enjoyed by an audience. Our algorithmic tools make it possible to generate a large number of variations and the residency can be used to create "exercises in style" showing the many different ways in which any given piece of high definition video footage can be edited together both in space and in time.
Brief description of technology
We use artificial intelligence for tracking and recognizing actors in the video, computing aesthetically pleasing virtual camera movements, generating a variety of interesting cinematographic rushes from a single video source, and editing them together into movies.
What the project is looking to gain from the collaboration and what kind of artist would be suitable
The residency is open to film editors and directors interested in large format, multi-screen, interactive movie-making. The goal of the residency is to explore innovative usage of the technology developed in the kino Ai project on procedural generation and editing of cinematographic rushes, e.g. interactive cinema installations using multiple screens and projectors.
Resources available to the artist
We will provide confortable office space, a powerful film editing workstation, and all necessary projectors and screens necessary for designing, implementing and demonstrating the results of the residency in the form of a video installation.
