Description of the challenges faced by the Tech Project

The challenge we face in Autodrive is to bring mobility to the masses in an acceptable and superior quality to improve quality of lives, health and safety, bringing fail operational zero emission and accident concepts to production. The same challenges we face developing such concepts will also be facing the artists working on it, ideas such as; what is the future of mobility? How will our future roads look like? Will transportation still mean the same it means today? Will we be really able to produce zero emission powertrains? Will cars move us around as we command? How will we interact with this living creature of traffic systems? Will the users accept this kind of futuristic vision? Basically, what is the future? And how is it influenced by our current experiences and demands?

Brief description of technology

Advancing fail-aware, fail-safe, and fail-operational electronic components, systems, and architectures for fully automated driving to make future mobility safer, affordable, and end-user acceptable. The artist will have the chance to visit the different research partners of the project all over Europe to have insight into the development and buildup of: automated driving vehicles (bus and shuttle), automated driving functions for cars (breaking assistants, 360° vision systems) as well as into the development of specific components for such vehicles e.g. motors, wireless chargers, batteries, sensors, high performance computing platforms and next generation communication. Since the project covers all aspects of the technologies that need to be developed for fully automated driving the artist has the chance to focus on the technologies that he/she thinks will change our everyday’s life in future. Thereby the artist has also the chance to speak to researches that are forecasting how these technologies will change the perception of the people in future.

What the project is looking to gain from the collaboration and what kind of artist would be suitable

By working on this project the artist will be exposed to varying topics and technologies such as experiencing the development of the first concepts and hardware (motors, inverters,,,etc.) for fail operational electric powertrains, the automation of shuttle busses carrying passengers through busy harbor areas, the vehicle’s operation even through failures, the development and implementation of artificially intelligent algorithms as the vehicle’s brain, the vehicles intelligence in perceiving environments and communicating and Human acceptance of such robots to change the commonly known mobility infrastructure. The objective from the project behind this collaboration is to get an insight how this futuristic vision would look like from various perspectives whether that is introspective or extrospective, as Art has always been a natural driving force of perception we as the project partners are interested to see how our technological image translates in an artistic world, and more importantly; how we as humans will adapt this upcoming change and react to it.

Resources available to the artist

office facility, technical equipment, internet connection, laboratory, and periods of availability for artistic production, meeting the staff possibly allocated to the project, interaction, discussions, embedded in the management team - Core team, participating technology exhibitions and opprtunity to create art work together with the whole team
