Description of the challenges faced by the Tech Project

The energy-modelling tool OMEG’ALPES will be made available to the artist: he will be assisted in its use by researchers and/or engineers. This Open Source tool can be used to study various challenges of energy systems such as energy autonomy or the use of renewable & waste energy coupled with storage devices. NB : OMEG'ALPES is currently under development and can be made available in a beta version. Its Open Source version will be released in the next few months. Moreover, the artist will benefit from the wide area of expertise of the researchers of the Cross-Disciplinary Program Eco-SESA: electrical engineering, political sciences, social sciences, economics among others.

Brief description of technology

Based on observations at the building and district scales, the Cross-Disciplinary Program Eco-SESA aims to produce knowledge, concepts, tools and methods for the valorisation of renewable & waste energy at district level. One of the tools that can be made available to the artist is OMEG'ALPES. OMEG’ALPES stands for Generation of Optimization Models As Linear Programming for Energy Systems. It is a free open-source energy systems meta-modelling tool for linear optimisation (LP, MILP) based on Python language. Basically, it is used to model energy systems and to explore potential use scenarios. It can be used as a decision support tool and provides the optimal operation plan of an energy system. Furthermore, Eco-SESA's researchers can also provide expertise on the program core fields: energy production, management and consumption; citizen involvement; territories studies; urbanism. This includes theoretical as well as practical knowledge.

What the project is looking to gain from the collaboration and what kind of artist would be suitable

To enhance the cross-disciplinary approach: opening the door to artists into Eco-SESA’s researchers' thoughts and debates will bring a fresher look on their work. It will allow researchers to get into an artistic vision, without any boundaries, in order for them to fantasise their vision of the future city. This liberation of their imagination may trigger new research ideas and perhaps even provide new cross-disciplinary areas. To share the energy challenges with the wide public: working with an artist will allow researchers to think out of the box regarding the ways they present energy challenges – which are usually abstract – to a general public. Thus, the partnership can be an opportunity of sharing energy challenges with the public if the artist is interested.

Resources available to the artist

The artist will work in the Atelier Arts & Sciences during the whole project (one of CEA’s (French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission) three open labs, together with Ideas Laboratory and Alps Design Lab). He or she will collaborate directly with the teams of experts of the CEA Liten in addition to Eco-SESA's (UGA), with the support of the team of Atelier Arts Sciences to facilitate this collaboration and organize the public presentation of its results at EXPERIMENTA 2020.
